Our Recipe for a Perfect Parakeet Mix

Our Recipe for a Perfect Parakeet Mix

Parakeets often are fed nothing but parakeet mix which is mainly millet and possibly a few fortified oats.

Then they are given millet spray as a treat.

Okay, well, budgies don’t live as long, or well as they could be on just millet alone.

Canary seed, which is well known to Canary owners is a more nutritious seed than millet and is usually a part of fancier parakeet blends.

But I prefer to make up my own mix which ensures that the parakeets get a more varied diet.

I will mix the following together in one big plastic jug.

This mix gives the budgies a much better seed mix that contains greens and egg protein and with the Clay-Cal it also includes healthy minerals.

Any brand Canary and Parakeet seed mix can be used, but we really like Higgins. They also contain small pellets that maybe, hopefully, the budgies will try a little as well.

They also get a shallow bowl with chopped mixed veggies, apple, and even spinach as available for a few hours a day. They really like this. It did take a sprinkling of fine millet on top to first entice them to try it, but now, they jump in daily.

To make this all really complete we sprinkle on the chopped food, or anything wet, some multi-vitamin powder like Nekton S or Avi-Era by Lafebers.
