Are Peanuts Making My Blue Crown Conure Itch?

Are Peanuts Making My Blue Crown Conure Itch?

Ward asks

My blue crown conure of at least 25yrs is acting odd.

He seems to be scratching and bobbing as well as if his just very uncomfortable.

I recently ordered some peanuts in the shell and would give him 3-4 each day as a treat.

I started noticing very small moths in my home that lead back to the bag of peanuts that was teaming with larvae.

Do you think my conure is in danger from eating these peanuts?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Dear Ward

The two issues are not related.

Regarding the peanuts, just toss the peanuts so they don’t further infest your home.

Or you can put them in the freezer for a week, and dole them out from there.

As long as the peanuts are not crumbly from the larvae the bird will be fine with them.

As far as the bird’s behavior, you can check for mites.

They often will live in the cracks of your wood perches.

You can take a piece of white paper and hold it under the perches and bang on them with something hard and see if any tiny red dots fall onto the paper from the cracks and ends.

If so, you have mites. Natural wood branches from outside are a common source for mites.

We have a mite spray if needed.
